A slow download is one of the most frustrating problems on the internet, mostly because the cause isn't obvious. Your speed test says you have 200 Mbps, yet the file is crawling at 800 KB/s. The good news: in most cases the bottleneck is something specific and fixable — and it's often not your internet connection at all.

These nine fixes are ordered roughly by impact. Start at the top.

1. Use a download manager with multi-connection acceleration

This is the single biggest win for most people. Your browser downloads a file using one connection to the server. One connection rarely saturates your bandwidth — TCP congestion control, latency, and per-connection server limits all cap how fast a single stream can go. 2. Check whether the server is the bottleneck

Sometimes the slowness has nothing to do with you. File hosts frequently throttle downloads per connection or per IP, especially for free users. Signs the server is the problem:

  • Speed tests and other downloads are fast, but this one file is slow.
  • The speed is suspiciously consistent (e.g. pegged at exactly 1 MB/s) — a hallmark of throttling.
  • The download speeds up at odd hours when the server is less loaded.

When the server is the limit, multi-connection acceleration (fix #1) still helps because the throttle is usually per connection, not per file. Otherwise, look for a mirror.

3. Try a different mirror or source

Popular files — Linux ISOs, open-source software, game mods — are usually hosted on multiple mirrors. A mirror geographically closer to you, or simply less crowded, can be dramatically faster. If the file exists as a torrent, that's often the fastest option of all, because BitTorrent pulls chunks from many peers at once instead of relying on one server.

4. Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet

Wi-Fi adds latency and, more importantly, jitter — inconsistent packet timing that TCP interprets as congestion, causing it to slow down. If you're downloading a multi-gigabyte file, plugging in an Ethernet cable is a five-second fix that can double your real-world throughput, especially on crowded 2.4 GHz networks or far from the router.

5. Move closer to the router (or fix your Wi-Fi)

If Ethernet isn't an option, improve the wireless link itself:

  • Use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band instead of 2.4 GHz — less interference, more bandwidth.
  • Reduce walls and distance between you and the router; Wi-Fi throughput drops fast through concrete and brick.
  • Keep the router away from microwaves, cordless phones, and Bluetooth hubs, which share the 2.4 GHz spectrum.

6. Stop competing traffic

Downloads share bandwidth with everything else on your network. Cloud backups (Google Drive, iCloud, OneDrive), game launchers updating in the background, streaming boxes, and other people in your home all take a slice. Pause sync clients and in-progress game updates while the download runs. On many routers you can also enable QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize your device.

7. Restart your router — but only once

Routers accumulate degraded states: full NAT tables, memory leaks, stuck QoS rules. A reboot clears them and can restore lost speed. But if you find yourself rebooting regularly to keep speeds up, the router itself is the problem — either update its firmware or replace it. A router from the ISP's bargain bin is a common hidden bottleneck on fast connections.

8. Change your DNS (a small but real effect)

DNS doesn't change raw throughput, but a slow DNS resolver delays the start of every download and can route you to a farther copy of a file when a CDN resolves different IPs by region. Switching to a fast public resolver like Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) shaves latency off every connection and occasionally picks a better CDN edge node.

9. Test at the right layer before blaming your ISP

If nothing above helps, verify where the loss actually is:

  1. Run a speed test on a wired connection, nothing else running.
  2. Compare it against the speed your plan promises.
  3. Download a large, well-hosted test file (a Linux ISO from a major mirror is ideal) with a download manager.

If the speed test matches your plan but real downloads are still slow everywhere, the issue is between the ISP and the wider internet (peering), and only your ISP can fix it — or a different ISP. If the speed test itself is far below your plan, now you have concrete numbers to give their support line.

Most slow downloads come down to one of three things: a single-connection bottleneck (fix it with a multi-connection download manager), a throttled or overloaded server (use mirrors or torrents), or a weak Wi-Fi link (wire in or improve the signal).
